To cap off National Poetry Month, I thought I’d finally share a project I conceived back in March 2017 - @fridaynightlightspoems!
I’d just learned about the concept of found poetry in a creative writing class. Taking words from already-existing text and making it into something of your own, with a flow. My friend, Liz Worth, did a version of this in her book, No Work Finished Here: Rewriting Andy Warhol.
I wanted to do a writing project in tribute to my favorite TV show, Friday Night Lights, and I was due for yet another re-watch. So, @fridaynightlightspoems was born!
I lift pieces of dialogue from each episode and make a poem relevant to a particular character or arc of each. Big games, character crises, life in Dillon are some of the things that get highlighted in the poems I create. Sometimes I’m so focused on one storyline that I can’t use an iconic line from the episode for the thing, sometimes I base a poem around an iconic line! There’s a lot of variety, different characters and situations covered. I picked Instagram as the project’s platform so that I could keep the poems neat and short, no longer than two Notes App screenshots per poem.
When I started @fridaynightlightspoems, I thought it’d be a quick little project. But other projects and life events got in the way. I made a more intentioned effort to at least finish off the first season by the time it was April 30th, so I could finally share it with y’all!
In the two years since beginning @fridaynightlightspoems, I’ve been able to gain traction with a small group of followers of FNL stans, which is awesome! Actors from the show, such as Aasha Davis (Waverly Grady), Libby Villari (Mayor Rodell), Katherine Willis (Joanne Street) and Liz Mikel (Corinna Williams), have even stopped by the account to follow it, like and/or comment on poems! I feel honored every time!
So today, as I wrapped up National Poetry Month by kicking off my poems for season two - FNL’s most maligned season - I wanted to finally share a few of my favorite poems with y’all. And remember to follow us on Instagram!
